Post subject: Coleman cook grill Proprietary fitting to quick connect fix
Santa brought my wife an I an early Christmas present . We got a Coleman Roadtrip LX grill to keep with the camper, the grill that comes with the outdoor kitchen package from Jayco is a bit less than desirable lol....but it did function! The Coleman had real good reviews from Camping World, so we got one.
This grill and most other Coleman grills are designed to operate off the little 1lb throwaway propane bottles. While they work fine, I'm not a fan of those little bottles. I wanted to run my grill off the rear propane port Jayco put on my fiver at the outdoor kitchen location.
A bunch of adapters and adapter hoses are readily available to do this, but most do not work because the propane pressure will be too low if run through the grill pressure regulator too, which that's the way the adapter hoses are made. The regulator on the trailer reduces pressure to 11WC or .40lbs. Thats not enough pressure to make the regulator at the grill function correctly and you end up with little or no flame at the grill.
So, the easy fix is to remove the pressure regulator at the grill because the gas is already regulated by the trailer regulator to .40lbs....just be sure your grill will operate on the low pressure because not all of them operate that low. The only problem with removing the grill regulator on a Coleman grill vs others, is for what ever reason, Coleman uses Proprietary threads and fittings. You can't just run to Lowes or the plumbing store and get parts/fittings to fit it.
So Sledgehammers fix, Drill and re-tap the proprietary thread to a standard 1/8NPT. Get a 1/8x2'' brass nipple and connect the hose quick connect to the grill adapter. Use good thread sealant and check for leaks. It worked like a charm!
I have the flame on the burner that's supposed to be there, and no 1lb propane bottles...just what I wanted. I just need to get a longer hose made so I can place the grill anywhere I want away from the trailer. I did the mod with old parts from another Coleman grill ( they were the exact same), so I could still use the 1lb propane bottles and regulator that came with the roadtrip if so needed.
Hopefully this will help someone in the future.

Just wanted to update this thread, for future reference to anyone.
I picked up a new 50' Natural Gas/ Propane rated 350psi hose on ebay. 50' is longer than what I wanted, but I do have the option now of pretty much placing the grill anywhere I want....I just couldn't pass up the price of 40.00 shipped for a 50' propane rated hose. Also gives me option of using any other low pressure propane item in the future off the same LP hose. I did run into a couple issues when I was getting fittings for the new hose.
The factory Jayco quick connects are also Proprietary too. The ID of the male quick connect is machined to fit over the check valve/nipple in the quick connect female coupler. The Camco and Heater Buddy quick connect fittings don't work just exactly perfect in the Jayco fittings. I did modify one male quick connect with some machining to fit the jayco female coupler, but it had a very slight leak and wasn't happy with that.....and it still didn't mate up as easily as it should have. The quick coupling ends are available through Jayco only. To make it easier on myself in the future, I converted mine to the more readily available Camco/Heater Buddy quick connect fittings. This way, If I ever want to run any other propane accessory off the hose, I can get a male quick connect fitting very easily.
I tried it out this evening, all is good. Now I'm ready to cook some food on it soon!
